Ethel was born in con May 14, 1909, the daughter of Mr. Justice Hjalmar A. Bergman and Mrs. Emilia Bergman. She was predeceased by her beloved husband J. T. Vyvian May in 1967; by her two brothers, Norman and Eric Bergman and by sister-in-law Jean Bergman. Ethel graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1929. She was a founding member of the Beta Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity. The "Alpha Gams" were always important to her, and these friendships endured all her life. She was proud of her Icelandic heritage and particularly enjoyed the study of the Icelandic language with the close-knit group that studied with Sigurlin Roed at the Scandinavian Centre. Ethel loved a good game of bridge; as well as other card games. She could also be counted on for endless patience at playing cards with children. She was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church and was active with the First Lutheran Church Women until her health failed her. Ethel was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her entire family enjoyed her loving care. She was also a faithful friend, who was always available to give help and support. The great pleasure of her later years was the company of her five great-grandsons, who could always make her laugh. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her. The family wishes to thank the exceptional staff of CD-1 at Riverview Health Centre for their most loving and compassionate care, both for Ethel and for all her family.
